GHANA INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION (GIMPA) MBA (PROJECT MANAGEMENT OPTION) GMBA 799 STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT STUDENT NAME: EMMANUEL SESSOU STUDENT ID NUMBER: MBAE 10040217 Question: Write a short note on the Balanced Scorecard Balanced Scorecardà Basics The balanced scorecard is aà strategic planning and management systemà that is used extensively in business and industry, government, and nonprofit organizations worldwide to align business activities to the vision and strategy of the organization, improve internal and external communications, and monitor organization performance against strategic goals. It was originated by Drs. We will write a custom essay sample on Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration or any similar topic only for you Order Now Robert Kaplan (Harvard Business School) and David Norton as a performance measurement framework that added strategic non-financial performance measures to traditional financial metrics to give managers and executives a more ââ¬Ëbalancedââ¬â¢ view of organizational performance. The balanced scorecard has evolved from its early use as a simple performance measurement framework to a fullà strategic planning and management system. ââ¬Å"The balanced scorecard retains traditional financial measures. But financial measures tell the story of past events, an adequate story for industrial age companies for which investments in long-term capabilities and customer relationships were not critical for success. These financial measures are inadequate, however, for guiding and evaluating the journey that information age companies must make to create future value through investment in customers, suppliers, employees, processes, technology, and innovation. The balanced scorecard suggests that we view the organization from four perspectives, and to develop metrics, collect data and analyze it relative to each of these perspectives: The Learning Growth Perspective, The Business Process Perspective, The Customer Perspective and The Financial Perspective The Learning Growth Perspective This perspective includes employee training and corporate cultural attitudes related to both individual and corporate self-improvement. In a knowledge-worker organization, people ââ¬â the only repository of knowledge ââ¬â are the main resource. In the current climate of rapid technological change, it is becoming necessary for knowledge workers to be in a continuous learning mode. Metrics can be put into place to guide managers in focusing training funds where they can help the most. In any case, learning and growth constitute the essential foundation for success of any knowledge-worker organization. The Business Process Perspective This perspective refers to internal business processes. Metrics based on this perspective allow the managers to know how well their business is running, and whether its products and services conform to customer requirements (the mission). These metrics have to be carefully designed by those who know these processes most intimately; with our unique missions these are not something that can be developed by outside consultants. The Customer Perspective Recent management philosophy has shown an increasing realization of the importance of customer focus and customer satisfaction in any business. These are leading indicators: if customers are not satisfied, they will eventually find other suppliers that will meet their needs. Poor performance from this perspective is thus a leading indicator of future decline, even though the current financial picture may look good. In developing metrics for satisfaction, customers should be analyzed in terms of kinds of customers and the kinds of processes for which we are providing a product or service to those customer groups. The Financial Perspective Kaplan and Norton do not disregard the traditional need for financial data. Timely and accurate funding data will always be a priority, and managers will do whatever necessary to provide it. In fact, often there is more than enough handling and processing of financial data. With the implementation of a corporate database, it is hoped that more of the processing can be centralized and automated. But the point is that the current emphasis on financials leads to the ââ¬Å"unbalancedâ⬠situation with regard to other perspectives. There is perhaps a need to include additional financial-related data, such as risk assessment and cost-benefit data, in this category. Reference Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Nintendo, Sony, Video Game case free essay sample
The video game industry has gone through six generations of consoles, and the seventh is now underway with new consoles from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. Atari led the first generation of the video game industry. They were able to create the first home video game Pong in 1972, and they were the first to develop the interchangeable cartridge and the joystick. The creation of the interchangeable cartridges allowed for third party independent video game developers to enter the market. Atari failed to develop a system that controlled who could develop games for Atari consoles, so the company eventually failed when low quality games created by independent developers flooded the market and caused prices to plunge. Nintendo was able to become the leader of the video game industry in the next generation by entering licensing agreements with third-party game developers and by instituting a ââ¬Å"Seal of Qualityâ⬠policy where no game could be published without Nintendoââ¬â¢s approval. We will write a custom essay sample on Nintendo, Sony, Video Game case or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Nintendoââ¬â¢s success with developing popular in-house games like Super Mario Brothers also contributed to their success in the second generation. However, Nintendo let Sega enter into market and take over as the next leader in the industry when Nintendo mistakenly delayed the release of their 16-bit console to avoid cannibalizing sales of the 8-bit console. Sega took advantage of Nintendoââ¬â¢s mistake by offering lower prices for their new console and games. Sony took control from Sega as the leader in the video game industry from 1988-2005 by targeting more mature audiences for their video games and being the first to install DVD-playing capability and Internet connectivity in the consoles. However, Nintendo was able to take over the lead in the most recent generation from ââ¬Å"forward lookingâ⬠Microsoft and Sony by being able to attract demand from younger and older audiences. This has caused Sony to reevaluate their strategy for the upcoming new generation of video game consoles. Sonyââ¬â¢s target market has traditionally been core gamers, Males aged 14-34. The Wii, while popular with a wide audience, was unpopular with this core demographic because it did not feature the games core gamers loved like Grand Theft Auto and Halo. The Playstation brand is strong because itââ¬â¢s the most powerful system available with the best graphics and games that core gamers love. The poor sales of the PS3 thus far are attributable to Microsoftââ¬â¢s first mover advantage and release delays, similar to Nintendoââ¬â¢s problems in the 16-bit generation. Now that the PS3 has been released, Sony can make its push towards industry leadership by focusing on this core demographic, offering exclusive games, and using its superior graphics and system power as a competitive advantage over Microsoft. While games for more mature audiences should be Sonyââ¬â¢s focus, they cannot ignore the expansion of the video game industry into new demographics. However, marketing the PS3 too heavily to these new audiences could dilute the PS3ââ¬â¢s cool factor to core gamers by casting it as something their grandparents can play. The Wii has already captured the cool factor for non-typical gaming demographics, and pushing the PS3 in this direction would alienate its core users. Instead, Sony should allow third-party developers to create games for younger audiences so that the younger siblings and kids of core gamers will not be left out on the PS3, but avoid focusing marketing campaigns for the PS3 on these new demographics. This would make the console inclusive for new demographics, but avoid alienating core users while pushing for dominance in the core gaming market. Sony should also continue to move the PS3 towards being a digital living room hub. The Xbox 360 is marketed as an all-encompassing living room experience that replaces the need for movie and music players, and sometimes PCs. Not recognizing this shift in how consoles are used in the home would be harmful to the PS3, and they could lose buyers based not on their video game experience but because it is lacking digital hub features that are becoming basic. Sony should expand their living room experience by allowing third party downloadable apps that add on to the digital hub, and take advantage of Blu-Rayââ¬â¢s industry victory by packaging the system with movie discs. Sony can regain its industry lead by becoming the go-to console for core gamers and pushing for games that are inclusive of all demographics. This can be accomplished by heavily marketing the system as the most powerful system on the market while offering an extensive catalog of games, especially their exclusive game catalog.

Living in a Faceless World free essay sample
Ben Dingman Period 2 October 2, 2012 Living in a Faceless World Imagine not being able to recognize your parents, living your everyday life at school and work, let alone recognizing yourself when you look into the mirror. Living in a Faceless World written by Joshua Davis is an article of how Brad Duchaine tries to solve the mystery of prosopagnosia. Fortunately, the majority of people donââ¬â¢t have to life with this condition. Duchaineââ¬â¢s first studies were on Zoe Hunn and Bill Choisser and how the condition affected their lives personally.Duchaine tried to help them learn more about their condition. Our parents most of the time pass down at least one trait that we are not too fond of. Unfortunately in Zoe Hunnââ¬â¢s life case, her father passed down prosopagnosia. Both of them just assumed they were bad with faces. Since Zoe couldnââ¬â¢t even recognize herself, she had no idea how gorgeous she was. We will write a custom essay sample on Living in a Faceless World or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When she was fourteen years old, her friends convinced her to do a modeling contest with them; which she ended up winning. Her prize was an offer from a modeling agency. She ended up being signed by Models 1 in London.Whenever she looked at photos, she could never recognize or spot herself. Since she was completely unable to appreciate how beautiful she was, she decided to go see a doctor. When the doctor didnââ¬â¢t find anything abnormal about her, he suggested counseling for shyness. Zoe never got actual help for her problem. She continued to travel and pursue her modeling career. When she was in Edinburgh, Scotland for the annual theater festival; she saw a performer that changed her life. His name was Mick and he was a tall mime with white hair and intense black eyebrows.Davis stated on page 53, ââ¬Å"He was the first person she felt sheââ¬â¢d ever really seen. â⬠Mick was also the first person she had ever recognized, due to his distinctive features; she realized that when she saw him again at a bar and knew who he was. She was so compelled by this experience that she had to go introduce herself. From the first they met they were madly in love with each other and soon afterwards they were walking down the aisle to get married. One day in their new home, she came across an article about a man named Brad Duchaine and his work with face blindness. It described everything that she has been going through her whole life; symptoms like the incapability to recognize faces, leading to social embarrassment and a sense of isolation. She was overwhelmed with emotion when she read this because it helped explain to her who she was. Bill Choisser is another person who suffers from fact blindness. He thought he was normal because he assumed that nobody saw faces either, however, he slowly figured out that he was abnormal. Choisser grew up to be a lawyer but he had some setbacks due to his condition. As Davis further explains on page 52, ââ¬Å"During the 1970s, as a small-town lawyer in the Illinois Ozarks, he struggled to convince clients that he was competent even though he couldnââ¬â¢t find them in court. He never greeted the judges when he passed them on the street ââ¬â everyone looked similarly blank to him ââ¬â and he developed a reputation for arrogance. â⬠Prosopagnosia even affected his family life; he grew distant from his mother. After being fed up with the feeling of emptiness, he left town and wanted to find a way to better his life. He got a job as a number cruncher at a construction firm in San Francisco. This job was good for him because it kept him isolated and he didnââ¬â¢t have to talk to people much. He felt a sense of freedom since his was far away from home, and started to wear colorful bandanas and let his hair grow out. With doing so, his appearance was distinguishable enough to help him recognize himself. With this recent confidence boost, it gave him the confidence to go see doctors. One doctor suggested that he might have emotional problems and referred him to a psychiatrist but no medicine worked. He decided to post a message about his experiences on a Usenet group, which was devoted to people with neurological problems. His subject was ââ¬Å"Trouble Recognizing Facesâ⬠, and soon after he got a reply from somebody who had the same issue. Brad Duchaine, an upcoming neuroscientist, struggled to fine a suitable subject for research. One night when he was having dinner with his parents and one of their friends, he talked about how he knew someone who couldnââ¬â¢t recognize faces. Duchaine wanted to find out more so he decided to call their parents. The father that he spoke to referred him to Bill Choisserââ¬â¢s Yahoo group and Web site; where there were a community of people with ââ¬Å"face blindnessâ⬠chatting online, discussing their issues. This was Duchaineââ¬â¢s big break to become a neuroscientist; seeing how nobody had actually studied the issue. A German doctor had previously named the condition ââ¬Å"prosopagnosiaâ⬠after observing an army lieutenant who had survived getting hit in the head by shrapnel. After Duchaine contacted Choisser, Choisser agreed to be his first clinical subject. Choisser was tested on his ability to recognize small differences between the same types of objects. Davis states on page 53, ââ¬Å"In one exam, Duchaine asked him to memorize the details of a particular house.Duchaine then showed him 150 pictures of other houses and randomly threw in images of the original. â⬠Choisser was successful in identifying it. After running other tests, it was apparent that the brainââ¬â¢s system for processing faces is separate from its system for discerning other things. Duchaine contacted and tested other people with the same condition and found tons of evidence that supported the fact that they can differentiate objects, just not faces. In 2004, he and Ken Nakayama conducted studies to find out the number of people who suffer from prosopagnosia. They assessed 1,600 people online, giving them face-recognition tests, and found that 32 had severely impaired face recognition. A German researcher also found that 17 out of 680 high school and college students had prosopagnosia as well. If the ratio was consistent, that would mean that nearly 6 million people in the US are face blind. In conclusion, prosopagnosia has a huge impact on peopleââ¬â¢s lives. For instance, Zoe Hunn, a rapidly rising model, didnââ¬â¢t even know she was beautiful because she couldnââ¬â¢t recognize herself.

A letter from Birmingham Prison was written by Dr. Martin Luther King in April 1963. As the title says, he is sitting in a prison in Birmingham, Alabama. King was sentenced for isolation in public places such as lunch counters and public toilets and sentenced for involvement in peaceful protest action (Berkley, 2003). Analyse the economic arguments of an independent central bank Essay
Analyse the economic arguments of an independent central bank - Essay Example It must be remembered that while affecting this right to any amount of degree the State is also assuming responsibility for the value of legal tender to an equivalent extent. Maintaining internal and external value of legal tender money is a function of inflation targeting and appreciation/depreciation of currency. Whether such critical monetary policy outcomes be left independent in the hands of Central Bank professionals or be merrily dictated by elected politicians who are often not trained in such trade. We discuss this and concomitant issues in paragraphs below. The most preferred and often cited argument favoring an independent central bank is that the power to expend money should be separated or delinked substantially from the power to create money. In case these two capabilities converge we have spendthrift governments indulging in fiscal profligacy while the Central Bank simply acts as a 24/7 mint or currency printing house. State control over the ability to create money has resulted in several episodes of economic mess. Even in the days of the ancient Roman Empire the tax collection by state officers in the form of silver coins ended up being melted and corrupted with inferior metals. This gave Caesar substantial money to divert to his luxuries and such spending was a multiple time of what came in as collected tax. The result was a spiraling inflation as now more coins vied for smaller stock of market wares. In todays monetary systems running on paper, plastic and electronic money the Roman story has been repeated quite often. The Latin American inflations are fable material with inflation rates sky rocketing often to 200% or more. In some extreme cases what was affordable at twilight became unaffordable by daylight. With complex and fine lending and borrowing of money as investible funds, interest rates have turned indicators that are pliable in the hands policy makers or dictators as the case may be.Government, myopic with political

Frederick Douglass and His Activism Research Paper
Frederick Douglass and His Activism - Research Paper Example At the age of six, he witnessed the cruelty of masters to slaves. Being a black child, the law required him to become a slave just like his mother. Frederick did not have a chance to attend school except for a little guidance from the wife of his master (Schmitt 6). However, this opportunity did not last long. Frederick took every opportunity to learn and his efforts made him a good orator. He used this skill to create a positive impact in society. Frederick spent his life advocating for justice in society. He was a vessel of justice in society. Frederick adopted principles that guided his life and actions (Reed 4). Despite his status as a slave, he believed in himself, and was always confident that one time he shall achieve what he believed. He did not let the determination to change his situation and that of others die. Although slavery shattered his ego and value as a man, he fought tirelessly and eventually rose above this. Contrary to what others could do or did, Frederick start ed the fight against the horrors of slavery when he was still a slave. He opposed the serious whipping that slaves received from their masters. With the little knowledge of formal education that he received from his masterââ¬â¢s wife, he opened a school for slave children. ... Because of his skills as an orator, he created an impact among people. However, he could not disclose specific information for fear of recapture back to slavery (10). The abolitionists promoted him to an antislavery agent because of his intriguing speeches on the suffering if slaves. This promotion granted him an opportunity to lobby for end to slavery. He used this opportunity well as he traversed different cities making speeches at different campaigns. Out of faith in himself, he had learnt how to write and in 1845, he released his first autobiography. This autobiography carried the story of plight in a slave home and his experiences as a slave. From the story of his life, he painted a picture of the real sate of a slave in the minds of many. The autobiography, a narrative of his life preached his message everywhere as it sold as far as Britain. However, publishing the narrative increased the risk of recapture back into slavery. Therefore, he left for Europe. Being in a foreign lan d did stop him from delivering speeches advocating for the end of slavery. Having gained experience in lecturing, he continued doing that in Britain, Ireland, and Scotland. The commitment to fight for the freedom of fellow man earned him fame. Advocates in England helped him buy his freedom from slavery. Now a free man, he was determined to do much more to end slavery, which denied human beings basic rights. Frederick returned to United States with a new strategy in his mind. He ventured into journalism for the sole purpose of being the voice of the oppressed in society. He launched the North Star, a paper expressing his views on slavery. In a short time, he wrote different papers supporting his activism in

Ethics Article Review Essay Example for Free
Ethics Article Review Essay This paper seeks to prepare a review of an article discussing ethics in accounting and financial decision making by making a brief summary, relating to assigned reading for the week, relating and applying the concepts to current or former employerââ¬â¢s organization, making improvement for the organization using the article as basis and explaining the importance of ethics in accounting and financial decision making. A description of the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley act will also be discussed including its impact on accounting and financial decision making. 2. Discussions 2. a. Brief Summary The article is talking about the importance of ethics in accounting and business. To dramatize its significance in business, it has cited a story of a number of rich people who may have attained their financial rewards in business but ended dying in less meaningful ways impliedly because of missing the principles of ethics. While the article admits that earning money or attaining riches may be an acceptable goal in business, there is still the question of how success in measured in the final analysis and for which the authors were arguing for riches acquired with honor and if a choice would be made between the two, it would be more preferable to have honor rather riches (Smith and Smith, 2003) . 2. b. Relating to assigned readings As to how the article relate to assigned readings for this week, it may be argued that the article has touched on the importance of rules or guides to actions in business. Ethics in business may be asserted to be indispensable if business will have to attain its goals in harmony with other goals of society such as those in economics and politics. 2. c. Application of article to organization As to how the ethical concepts discussed on the article may apply to this researcherââ¬â¢s former or current organization, it may be argued that the universality of principles related to ethics would really make it difficult to exclude this researcherââ¬â¢s organization from any of its application.. Since my organization is part of the larger society where everybody else lives, it cannot isolate itself from the community by doing unethical things. It cannot even argue that any illegal or unethical thing that it may do will not matter in a world where there many players who may be affected by decisions made. In the same way that a member of society can make a difference for the good of the community so with the failure of one organization or even a person in the organization can do to the detriments of many if not all of the members of the community. 2. d. Recommendations for improvement of the organization To make recommendations for improvement on this researcherââ¬â¢s or organization using the article as basis, the organization should encourage simple living among its executives so that they could be more disciplined in the way the companyââ¬â¢s resources are being managed not only for the stockholders but even to every stakeholders who stand to benefits from the observance of ethical conduct in the organization. The other stakeholders of course include the employees who aspire for long-term employment (Sears, 2003), the creditors and lenders who resources need to be protected as well, customers who need to have their needs and wants for companyââ¬â¢s products and services continuously satisfied and the government who must continue ensuring payment of taxes and compliance with regulations. 2. e. The importance of ethics in accounting and financial decision making and how the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act affects the same The important of ethics in accounting and financial decision making cannot be underestimated. Without ethics there would be no responsibility for right or wrong act can be demanded from people making decisions. The managers who are considered agents of stockholders would instead enrich themselves at the expense of stockholders investments. On the other hand, these stockholders would just exploit whatever they can to the detriment of their principal, this time their debt capital providers. The organization can likewise treat its employees with disrespect and violate the latterââ¬â¢s if there in no ethics that would guide them. Laws will be insufficient to exact compliance if people in the organization were not instilled the proper values when they were still young in the same way that it is hard to teach tricks to an old dog. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 is a classic example to legislate rules of conduct that would improve corporate governance (Ali, et. al, 2006) including a more strict compliance of requirements in regulating companies in terms of financial statements and ensuring of ethical conduct of external auditors (Bainbridge, 2007). Although the law is a positive act to ethical practice of doing business, the choice to do what is right is still with decision makers who must have the right sense of values for society. 3. Conclusion: Ethics has a purpose to attain. It is a part of an organizationââ¬â¢s life since it is a guide to decision making not only in accounting and finance but even to all other aspect of business operations. A sense or rightness or wrongness offers a choice and that which is good is incidentally consistent with ethics. As the world seems to be painting what are the standards of its success when actually they are not the real and lasting ones, ethics its and principles have much to offer in making the correct decision that will lead real and lasting success for human existence. The article has argued that honor is preferable than riches but riches need not be inconsistent with riches as long as they are ethically acquired. An essay on alduous huxley :: essays research papers
An essay on Alduous Huxley The subject of Alduous Huxley is a controversial issue. At one stage or another, every man woman or child will be faced with the issue of Alduous Huxley. While it has been acknowledged that it has an important part to play in the development of man, there are just not enough blues songs written about Alduous Huxley. Inevitably Alduous Huxley is often misunderstood by the upper echelons of progressive service sector organisations, who just don't like that sort of thing. Keeping all of this in mind, in this essay I will examine the major issues. Social Factors Society is a simple word with a very complex definition. When blues legend 'Bare Foot D' remarked 'awooooh eeee only my dawg understands me' [1] he was clearly refering to the impact of Alduous Huxley on today's society. Much has been said about the influence of the media on Alduous Huxley. Observers claim it cleary plays a significant role amongst the developing middle classes. Our post-literate society, more than ever before, relies upon Alduous Huxley. It grows stonger every day. Economic Factors We no longer live in a world which barters 'I'll give you three cows for that hat, itââ¬â¢s lovely.' Our existance is a generation which cries 'Hat - $20.' We will study the Spanish-Armada model, a lovely model. Transport Costs Alduous Huxley Clearly the graphs demonstrates a strong correlation. Why is this? My personal view is that transport costs sings a very different tune. Perhaps to coin a phrase Alduous Huxleyeconomics will be the buzz word of the century Political Factors No man is an island, but what of politics? Comparing current political thought with that held just ten years ago is like comparing night and day. Consider this, spoken at the tender age of 14 by the famous political Achilles Shandy 'Man's greatest enemy is complacency with regards to personal and political hygiene.' [2] Considered by many to be one of the 'Founding Fathers' of Alduous Huxley, his words cannot be over-looked. If I may be as bold as to paraphrase, he was saying that 'political ideals are built on the solid cornerstone of Alduous Huxley.' Is Alduous Huxley politically correct, in every sense? King Lear – Bbc Edition vs Laurence Olivier
King Lear video comparison King Lear BBC vs. King Lear ft. Laurence Olivier In comparing the opening scenes of BBC and Laurence Olivierââ¬â¢s interpretation of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s King Lear, I believe that BBCââ¬â¢s interpretation is more engaging to the audience. There are qualities that Olivierââ¬â¢s King Lear has an edge on, but I do consider those as less important than other factors in play. The wardrobe and music of Olivierââ¬â¢s King Lear is much more extensive in comparison to BBCââ¬â¢s, but overall BBCââ¬â¢s King Lear does have better acting and camera angles. To many people, the music and wardrobe would come second to actor performance and filming. The camera angles and choice of location of both plays is important, but in Olivierââ¬â¢s it features mainly headshots in the opening of King Lear and close ups of the actors. Putting the actor in focus it makes a strong impression of each actorââ¬â¢s facial expression, but this does not allow for backgrou nd acting from other actors. In BBC, just prior to Lear disowning Cordelia, Kent is seen in the centre of the screen shocked and befuddled; speechless. With the directing of Olivierââ¬â¢s King Lear, the camera usage does not allow for this. The setting used in Olivierââ¬â¢s interpretation was also unique as it appeared to take place in a Stonehenge-style location, but as special as it is, it does not support the atmosphere of the play. King Lear is sitting merely on a raised platform. Not what history would have portrayed for the throne of a King. Although Learââ¬â¢s room appears to be wooden in BBCââ¬â¢s interpretation, it still seems to show more respect to Lear, just as what would have during the time period that they are portraying.Music in the background is something that BBC lacks compares to Olivier's. The music in Olivier's play matches the time period, and accompanies the entrance of the King and his royal subjects, giving Lear, his daughters, and sons-in-law the nobility they deserve. Actors in both plays deliver the script well, but in Olivier does not play out the role of a king and a father well. Olivier's reaction to Cordelia saying nothing is too inert for someone with that ego. The delivery of the lines appears to be a chore for Olivier, rather than performing his lines with passion. In BBCââ¬â¢s version, Lear hesitates, and wonders for a short while before responding to Cordeliaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"nothingâ⬠, mimicking the contemplation that Lear would have undergone upon hearing nothing. Olivier dressed in vibrant colours along with his royal subjects give Olivierââ¬â¢s drama an edge. But the effect is not substantial enough to win over what appears to be rushed scenes with his play. With better actor delivery and camera angles, the opening scenes of BBCââ¬â¢s King Lear is much more effective at bring Shakespeareââ¬â¢s King Lear to life.

How Polar Bears are adapted to their Environment Essay
The Polar Bearââ¬â¢s fur is extremely thick and it traps the heat so well, you canââ¬â¢t see one in inferred vision. This is good because the retention of heat keeps it permanently warm. It does not lose body heat as other animals and people do, and it would not be recognised by an inferred scanner, such as used when searching earthquakes and other devastated sites for survivors. The Polar bear would not be detected so this shows how well the bears fur keeps its body warm, especially in icy cold freezing temperatures. Polar bears can go weeks between meals. Their digestive system, like true carnivores, is also more adapted for processing meat than plant material. Their large stomach capacity is designed to allow them to take advantage of unexpected large meals which will serve to tide them over during the slower months when food might be hard to find. This would keep them from starving until they can find more food. However starvation is not a cause of death for the Polar Bear, as their ability to store body fat, enables them to go such long periods without food, that it would be almost impossible for the Polar Bear to go hungry! The necks of Polar Bears are longer than their nearest kin, the brown bear. This adaptation makes it easier for them to keep their heads above water when swimming, and, like others, enables the Polar Bear to live in the somewhat harsh Artic environment! The forepaws on a Polar Bear are very large. With a diameter approaching 30 centimetres (12 inches) and partial webbing between their toes, Polar Bears are able to use their front feet much like paddles to propel them rapidly through the water. This helps them to catch their pray, as they can swim very fast so their pray doesnââ¬â¢t get away. The hind feet are slightly smaller. On both the front and hind feet, the bottoms are covered with dense fur which affords better traction when moving on ice. This helps them to move quicker, whether they are running away from predators, or running towards their pray! On land though, they are not as quick as brown bears and appear to have traded off speed for their extremely massive forelegs which they use to break through seal dens or flip a largeà seal out of the water. They are able to attain speeds of 40 kilometres per hour (25 miles per hour) for short distances. The carnassial teeth of Polar Bears have re-evolved changing back from a flatter crushing surface to a sharper-edged surface suitable for shearing off bite sized chunks of meat from their prey. Also, the canine teeth, used for seizing and holding prey, are longer, sharper and spaced wider apart than in brown bears. The heavy fur the polar bears are covered with is varied from pure white to more of a yellow hue. The white fur is important camouflage for the bears as they hunt their prey out on the ice pack. The coat consists of two layers ââ¬â an undercoat of fine white hair and outer coat composed of long guard hairs. The individual guard hairs are hollow. This gives the fur an actual translucent effect!! The hollow hairs also help to make the Polar Bear moreà buoyant when swimming. The actual colour of the skin of the Polar Bear is black. It is thought that this is an adaptation for better heat retention. The female polar bear has developed a unique survival technique when it comes to the development of an embryo. It is called delayed implantation. Delayed implantation clearly serves an important survival need for the mother. Should the female not have put on enough fat reserves before the time to den arrives, the embryo will not implant and it is simply reabsorbed by her body. She will then continue her winter hunting out on the pack ice.

Week 3 #2 Example
Week 3 #2 Example Week 3 #2 ââ¬â Coursework Example Human resource Wal mart has unique model, whose adoption aims to train their employeesââ¬â¢ three items that include service for the customer, striving to achieve excellence, and the respect for other employees. From a Wal mart perspective, it is the people they offer their services that matters the most, therefore, employees must strive to attain customer satisfaction to achieve the difference. The Kirkpartrickââ¬â¢s four levels of program for evaluating the training of employees has immense application especially for organisations that has structural models that seeks to invest in the service provision through enhancement of capacity building. The first level is reaction, which aims at measuring the customer satisfaction. The situation at Wal mart can adopt the Kirkpartrickââ¬â¢s approach by developing acceptable standards that aims to measure the satisfaction of the customer based on the reaction towards these standards and taking appropriate actions (Serial solution, 201 1). The second level is learning, which aims to help Wal mart employees acquire knowledge and skills to improve the services and attitude of the customers. The third level is behaviour, which aims to assist employees change their desires, what they must know, and the right environment for interaction (Dreher and Dougherty, 2002). Evaluation of changes before and after the training based on observable traits would help the immediate supervisors at Wal mart attain their training target. The most important part of the training is the result level, which aims to measure the final goals related to the improvement of work quality, increased productivity, and low turnover (Dreher and Dougherty, 2002). The Wal mart can use Kirkpartrickââ¬â¢s approach of evaluating the training by using control groups and allowing enough time until the results can be attained. ReferencesDreher,G., & Dougherty, T. Journey artical Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words
Journey artical - Article Example as a company. It is an American multi-national communications company which is based in Illinois. It was known initially in 1928 as Galvin Manufacturing. By 1947, the company changed its name to Motorola though that name had been used as the company's trademark since the 1930ââ¬â¢s. The company's first product was, at the time, radio car. Numerous Motorolaââ¬â¢s products were radio-related, starting from battery eliminator for radios, and then to the world's first walkie-talkie. Nowadays, the company is known well for cellular phones of high quality and at the same time as the leading provider for the microprocessor which is used in Commodore Amiga, Apple Macintosh and Power Macintosh personal computers. It is at the same time offering different lines of communication products like satellite systems, digital cable boxes and modems (2007). China Laws Law in the People's Republic of China attracted very little attention a decade ago. But it is now attracting quite a good deal of attention from the business industry. Communicative interest on this subject are everywhere. Commercial services are even now keeping close tracks of Chinese legal developments, while publishing just about all foreign-related laws and regulations as they are being issued from Beijing together with English translations. There even exists a number of Chinese law discussion lists which can be found on the Internet, talking about broad policy issues and technical legal points which are the main topic of more and more spirited dealings by specialists around the world. (Corne, 1997) There are good explanations for this flourishing interest in Chinese law. Nowadays, foreign businesses that are involved in or thinking about doing business with China have an evident need to get a better understanding of the developing legal situation within which they will have to run. Foreign governments, in view of China's increasing value in the world trade and investment, are concerned with protecting th eir nations' interests by assuring the compatibility of China's legitimate scheme with those of the world's economy. For China itself, its "open door" policy of promoting foreign trade and foreign investment has been the booster of its economic improvement. It is at the same time the main motivational force behind its fast economic growth since 1978. Modification in foreign business laws has led into a broadening improvement of the entire legal system to meet the needs of a industry economy. Both its people and their leaders knows that continuing development in this aspect relies on the continuing efforts to take their legal system into agreement with world standards. (Robinson, 1995) China's legal regime for the approval and standard of foreign direct investment was an important focus of discussions. It is on this topic that the National People's Congress has been most productive in passing legislation. It is at the same time in this area that the laws passed have had such momentou s outcomes. China played its introductory law concerning foreign direct investment in 1979 which was known as the Equity Joint Venture Law. This activity authorized the creation, though was dependent to state approval, of joint Sino-foreign business undertakings. Participants in these ventures are liable for the firm's financial obligations, at the same time, entitling them to its profits to the point of capital that was brought in. They are approved to exist for up to 30 years and are accepted under Chinese law as legal persons. Equity joint ventures are ruled

The Process of Restructuring Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Process of Restructuring Business - Essay Example The several buyout funds that were interested in outright acquiring the firm would surely ensure a healthy payout to the shareholders however if these were sufficient to restructure the firm was unclear. Also, they would restrict the role of the founders. This led to a second option which was to attain leveraged recapitalization, as suggested by investment bankers. The downside of this option was the large scale of indebtedness and transactional complexity. This leads us to the most viable option for Fojtasek suggested in shape of a hybrid transaction by a private equity group from Boston, Heritage Partners; with the agreement leading to lower debt levels, control for the family, and majority ownership for existing shareholders. In July 1995, Randall Fojtasekââ¬âin partnership with Heritage Partnersââ¬âundertook a considerable restructuring. The first step in this process of restructuring was acquiring Bishop Manufacturing, a vinyl window manufacturer in Northeast. This was seventeen months later sold to Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, a private equity firm in the United States that specializes in leveraged buyouts. At a 45% premium to the original purchase price the shareholderââ¬â¢s profited from the transaction and a small amount was reinvested into the firm. Heritage partners, also known as, Partners International (HPI) is a senior-level executive search and consulting firm that focuses on delivering superior work to a select group of clients globally in the life sciences industry. During the undertaking of the transaction, they were concentrating their efforts in raising follow-on funds of about 300 $ million. They were successful in their efforts and raised the amount from a variety of institutional investors such as Brinson Partners, the General Motors Investment Management Company, and the private equity arm of the Princeton endowment, Nassau Capital. It appears that Randall Fojtasek in the late 90ââ¬â¢s had overcome the dilemma regarding the company he had faced in 95. Not only had he managed to remain CEO of the firm, now renamed to Atrium Companies but had also managed to retain a large equity stake in the firm.

Porter s 5 forces analysis and a life cycle analysis - why is the Assignment
Porter s 5 forces analysis and a life cycle analysis - why is the Australian Car Manufacturing Industry closing down - Assignment Example Although global and local economic conditions have played a major part in the death of the manufacturing industry, blame has also been placed on the many parties and factors involved. By studying the current state of the industry and using porterââ¬â¢s five forces analysis, we can better discern as to what the main drivers were that caused the ultimate death of the Australian automotive manufacturing industry. The Australian car manufacturing industry has become far too small to be sustainable for any particular manufacturer. Australiaââ¬â¢s three car manufacturers Holden, Ford and GM all announced they would shut down their local manufacturing operations within nine months of each other. With the local economy facing harsh times it seems that with current size of the market and increased competition from imports has simply gotten too small to be profitable. As a matter of fact, the size of the market had gotten so small that all three companies began to rely on each other just to survive and stay afloat. It has been a long time coming, the death of the Australian auto manufacturing industry. Although, there have been many interrelated reasons that have caused the slow demise of the industry many individuals put the most of the blame on the federal government. It has been blamed for much of the troubles that have negatively affected local manufacturers from their low import tariffs. Many of the federal government initiatives such as their Free Trade Agreements with China and India, low import tariffs, and the controversial automotive financial bailouts have created an industry that cannot sustain itself. Others place the blame to the car manufacturer themselves that used the Australian government like their own piggybank to bail them out financially. Additionally, the federal government and their economic policy itself have created a nation with relatively high wages, strong currency coupled with the extremely low

Race and Minorities in the Jury Box Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Race and Minorities in the Jury Box - Assignment Example The selection is most difficult when it is a high-profile case and everyone has heard of the defendant. Introduction In 2006, it was estimated through the United States Bureau of Justice statistics, that over 1.1 million adults were convicted of felonies and, of this amount, 38% were Black. Most of these cases were handled in state courts and, those who had been arrested and remained in jail, had their cases handled more quickly than others did. Mainly this was due to the fact that most could not hire a lawyer or post bail (Gabbidon & Greene, 2013). There are several processes in how cases move forward to a trial, but once it does, and the case requires a jury, then there will be a session where members of the public are requested to appear for potential selection to act as a juror in the case. This paper concerns the process of jury selection and how it can be biased by race and minority composition, or lack of it (Gabbidon & Greene, 2013). When it comes to jury selection, there has been considerable discourse about the makeup of jurors and whether jurors should be the same race as the defendant, or not the same race as the defendant, or a mixture (AP, 2008). 1.When determining suitable jurors for a trial, it is never made publicly clear why lawyers might choose one juror over another. However, some policymakers and legal scholars have now proposed reforms to ensure that there is sufficient variety of racial minorities on any given jury. While the Civil Rights Act of 1875 was created to eliminate racial discrimination in jury selection, yet it still does exist, and it happens more often in Southern states (EJI, 2010). Some counties have excluded almost 80% of qualified Blacks in selecting juries in counties that have a majority population of Blacks, citing obscure reasons such as being single, married, too old, too young, for having attended black colleges, or not having attended college, having an out-of-wedlock child, and even for how they walk (EJI, 2010). It can also be a case of religious views or tendencies to not want to send someone to jail (AP, 2008). How this detailed information was obtained is unclear unless it was through interviews or surveys with lawyers. In justifying reforms for the composition of a jury, the primary factor that should hold sway is that any prospective juror must demonstrate an understanding of the legal process, and a willingness to not be biased. 2. The jury composition should be made of all races, not just all White or all Black, or all Hispanic (EJI, 2010). Lawyers should make a reasonable attempt at including all races and minorities, when possible.

Oral Glucose Tolerance Test Report
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test Report Jason Taylor Introduction Glucose is a simple sugar that provides nearly half of the bodyââ¬â¢s energy, it canââ¬â¢t be eaten directly thus it is obtained from eating foods that contain carbohydrates. The liver stores about 1/3 of the bodyââ¬â¢s total glucose in the form of glycogen while muscle cells store 2/3 of glucose in the same form (Whitney Rolfe, p99). The amount of sugar present in the blood is known as the blood sugar, these levels need to be tightly regulated by the body (Jiang Zhang 2003). Eating food causes an increase in blood glucose levels, this stimulates insulin release from the pancreas into the blood stream, insulin stimulates glucose uptake into cells, stimulates liver and muscle cells to store it as glycogen and then the excess glucose is converted into fat (Whitney Rolfe, p99). Low blood glucose levels are stimulated by the glucagon release from the pancreas, this causes the stored glycogen to be converted to glucose which causes an increase in the blood glucose levels (Whit ney Rolfe, p99). Diabetes Mellitus is a group of disorders that have glucose intolerance in common, type I and type II diabetes are the most common. Type I diabetes mellitus is when the cells donââ¬â¢t produce enough insulin and its symptoms include excessive thirst and urination, lethargy, unexplained weight loss and wounds that heal slowly. Type I diabetes is due to the loss of beta cells in the pancreas which are responsible for the secretion of insulin (McCance Huether, pg745). There have been two types of type I diabetes identified, type 1A is an autoimmune disease in which environmental and genetic factors trigger the destruction of beta cells. Type 1B is non-immune and itââ¬â¢s when individuals having varying amounts of insulin deficiency (McCance Huether, pg746). Type II diabetes mellitus is less common and is when cells donââ¬â¢t respond to insulin, genetic factors such as a lack of insulin receptors combined with environmental influences like obesity can result in the pathophysio logic mechanisms for type II diabetes like decreased insulin secretion and insulin resistance. These are crucial for the development of type II diabetes mellitus (McCance Huether, pg750). There are numerous complications associated with diabetes such as hypoglycaemia, hyperglycaemia and diabetic ketoacidosis. Hypoglycaemia is when thereââ¬â¢s low levels of glucose which is damaging as the brain and nervous system rely on glucose to function. Hypoglycaemia can be caused by too much insulin, strenuous physical exertion or inadequate food intake (Munter Spiegelman, 2007). Impaired glucose regulation can lead to hyperglycaemia which is abnormally high levels of glucose in the blood, for this to occur at least 80-90% of the beta cell function have to be compromised (McCance Huether, pg758). Carbohydrates need to be broken down into monosaccharaides before they can be absorbed. Their digestion begins in the mouth when salivary amylase hydrolyses them to shorter polysaccharides, they then progress to the stomach that doesnââ¬â¢t play a role in carbohydrate digestion however its low pH inactivates the salivary amylase (Whitney Rolfe, p101). The small intestine is where most of the digestion occurs, pancreatic amylase breaks down the polysaccharides to monosaccharideââ¬â¢s which are then absorbed (Whitney Rolfe, p103). A glucometer is used to calculate the concentration of glucose in the blood, a small drop of blood or a sample is placed on a disposable strip which is inserted into the glucometer which calculates the blood sugar levels (Whitney Rolfe, 2013). An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is used to detect diabetes mellitus, there are accepted minimum and maximum values for glucose levels in blood (mmol/L) to be within, if they are beneath or exceed them it could indicate a diabetic profile. In this report we investigated the presence of glucose in urine samples as well as the BGL in prepared samples to determine if any of the patients showed a diabetic profile. Methods Most of the methods were followed as stated in: ââ¬Å"RMB2530 Pathophysiology 1: Laboratory Manual, 2013â⬠however due to safety and health issues real blood and urine samples were not taken. Results Table 3: Class Glucose Tolerance Test Results (Mary) Table 3: Class Glucose Tolerance Test Results (Alex) Graph 1: Blood Glucose Vs. Time for Mary and Alex Discussion Mary had a normal OGTT result as her blood glucose levels didnââ¬â¢t have a dramatic increase and they decreased efficiently as well. Maryââ¬â¢s blood glucose rose at 30 minutes (6.06 mmol/L) however the liver responded to the extra glucose by releasing insulin which promoted the uptake of glucose by cells and its storage as glycogen (Rubin Strayer, pg680). Alex had an impaired response to glucose as his glucose levels rose at 30 minutes and kept rising till 60 minutes, his highest glucose reading was 16 mmol/L while Maryââ¬â¢s highest was 6 mmol/L. From 60 minutes onwards Alexââ¬â¢s blood glucose exceeded the maximum range acceptable for blood glucose levels. At 60 minutes his blood glucose was 17.16 mmol/L while the maximum accepted range is 8.9 mmol/L. This indicates a diabetic profile as a normal response is insulin release by the pancreatic beta cells that regulate glucose uptake in liver and skeletal muscle. The delayed decline in glucose suggests that the beta cel ls arenââ¬â¢t producing glucose or that the cells arenââ¬â¢t responding to the insulin (Rubin Strayer, pg1090). The liver is the primary organ involved in glucose homeostasis responding rapidly to fluctuation in blood glucose levels. The reason that there is an increase in blood glucose is due to the consumption of food. Eating foods causes an increase in blood glucose, this stimulates the release of insulin by the pancreas which is responsible for stimulating glucose uptake. Excess blood glucose is utilised by the body and stored as glycogen in liver and skeletal muscle while excess glucose is converted to fat (Whitney Rolfe, p99). During periods of starvation or fasting, there is a lack of glucose. Low blood glucose levels are stimulated by the glucagon release from the pancreas, this causes the stored glycogen in the liver to be converted to glucose which causes an increase in the blood glucose levels. The conversion of glucose to glucose is known as glycogenolysis, gluconeogenesis is formation of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources such as amino acids and fatty acids and is utilised dur ing fasting periods. Symptoms of patients with diabetes mellitus include excessive urination and thirst, lethargy, headaches, dizziness, mood swings and leg cramps. Type I and II are the most commonly known diabetes forms however there are other types. Some people donââ¬â¢t have high enough blood glucose levels to be classified as diabetes, however since they are not normal itââ¬â¢s known as impaired glucose metabolism or pre-diabetes. There are two pre-diabetic conditions; impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and impaired fasting glucose (IFG). IGT is when glucose levels are not high enough to be classified as diabetes, however they are still high while IFG are when blood fasting glucose levels escalated during fasting states but are yet again not high enough to be classified as diabetes. Gestational diabetes is a high blood glucose level during pregnancy as a result of the hormones, it usually goes away after the babyââ¬â¢s birth. Excessive thirst with large amounts of diluted urine is known as diabetes insipidus (DI), it occurs in two forms; central diabetes insipidus (CDI) and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI). CDI is due to an ADH d eficiency, ADH or anti-diuretic hormone is responsible for retaining water. NDI is when the kidneys or nephrons are insensitive to ADH. Glycosuria is the presence of glucose in the urine, glucose is usually filtered back into the bloodstream by the kidneys. Untreated diabetes mellitus is due to elevated glucose levels which leads to glycosuria. Filtrate pass through sieves in the kidney walls and get reabsorbed in to the blood. Damage to the filters results in filtrate excretion into urine. Urine sample A belonged to Alex and was positive for glucose as it changed from blue (negative) to dark green (+). Urine sample B belonged to Mary and it was negative for glycosuria. Alexââ¬â¢s positive urine sample could be due to his elevated glucose levels. Any differences between individual results could be attributed to a number of different reasons, there could have been errors during the glucometer readings such as contaminating the glucometer stick. There could have been errors made during the pipetting of the stock glucose and water resulting in a different concentration to what was required. The experiment should be repeated again to add validity to the results. Overall the experiment followed scientific expectations, the patient with diabetes mellitus was identified through measurement of the blood glucose levels as well as testing of a urine sample. The experiment should be repeated again to add validity to the results. References Tortora, GJ, Funke, BR, Case, CL (2010).Microbiology: An Introduction. 10th ed. International risk management Essay
A Letter of Credit is a document issued by a bank at the request of its customer promising to pay the exporter for the goods and services provided that the exporter provides all the documents as stated in the terms and conditions. To the exporter a letter of credit guarantees payment and reduces production risk if the buyer has a change of his order.
